Today is a big day in the calendar as it's World Earth Day!

This day is super special as it's the day that pulls us together to remind us that we need to do everything we can to save our wold.

Earth Day is observed on April 22, both this year and every year. It was established 54 years ago, on April 22, 1970, to show support for environmental protection on a worldwide scale.

Earthday.org is organising a global series of events on Monday that will involve one billion participants across more than 193 countries.

Governments and NGOs will negotiate the terms of the United Nations Global Plastic Treaty this Earth Day in Ottowa.

Earth Day said in a statement: “Let’s unite in our efforts to protect the earth today and for generations to come. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and create a more sustainable world.”

Just what is the meaning of World Earth Day?

The idea was originally put out by peace campaigner John McConnell during a 1969 Unesco conference in San Francisco, and it was supposed to take place on March 21, the first day of spring.

A month later, on April 22, US Senator Gaylord Nelson sponsored a countrywide environmental teach-in, which overshadowed McConnell's original idea.

After being dubbed Earth Day, its goals expanded to become the biggest single-day protest in human history.

Twenty million Americans were motivated to demonstrate against the consequences of 150 years of industrial progress in the streets by Earth Day, which attracted the attention of the media.
