2009 Charles Darwin £2 Coin

The Charles Dawin £2 coin from 2009 can still be found in your change, on average you would see one of this coin design in every 151 two pound coins received as change.

This amazing coin features Charles facing a chimpanzee face to face on the front of the coin.

The two-pound coin was released to marks 200 years since Darwin's birth. The reason for having a chimpanzee with Darwin was due to them being one of the closest genetic relatives to humans, and an important part of the evolution model. This reverse design was created by Suzie Zamit and is used with the obverse by Ian Rank-Broadley. The edge inscription states "ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES 1859" – the name of the book Darwin published his theory in.

This coin is worth on average of £5 - £10 depending on condition as it has been in circulation for many years now!

Some coin collections claim that there is an minting error on some of the coins in circulation claiming that it is worth more than the one that has not got the errors so if you have one of these coins then it may be worth more but this minting error has not been confirmed by the Royal Mint.

The error is apparently little raised dots surround the perimeter of the coin's silver-colored part on the Obverse (heads) side. These dots may be offset on certain coins; for instance, they may occur below the Queen's neck and be absent on the opposite side, or they may be distant from the edge above the head of the queen and quite close to it.

This is a typical feature of all two-pound coins produced prior to 2015 and is not regarded as a minting fault.
